The Art Co-ordinator has over 23 years of experience of working with adults with an Autism Spectrum Condition. A wealth of informed and exciting ideas is provided to support the social and personal development of our service users, within the context of their individual autism condition. Projects are tailored to their existing skills and tastes and aimed at reducing their functional problems. Several highly qualified volunteers add their specialist skills to help service users participate in a range of arts and crafts related activities including photography, drawing and painting, textiles, ceramics and general woodwork.

The Art and Craft studio offers in addition, a textile printing and fashion design service to all of our service users. It is targeted at the minority of females with autism, who may be marginalised by activities that are unconsciously designed with a male population in mind. However, male service users have also enjoyed and benefited from working with fabrics and being given the opportunity to participate.

Competition and Exhibition hide

Since 2010 we have held an open competition and exhibition with cash prizes. The exhibition and competition has been very successful and attracted many entries from all over the UK. Since 1993 we have held 40 mixed and one person art exhibitions too, and we have set the pace in establishing a visual aesthetic for people on the spectrum, supporting their differences in other functional areas. The reciprocal processes of art as an activity, the making of art and the looking at art are key to ensuring that the physical and psychological differences of disabled people become acceptable, not by changing them but by changing ourselves.

Housed around a sunny courtyard, the Art and Craft studios are well lit, well equipped and offer tuition to groups of service users at ratios of one to one or three to one contact time. Our in depth knowledge of our service users' needs and understanding of the complexities of autism and the practical requirements of a socially integrated personal development plan continues to motivate our attempt to find attainable goals for them.
