Wood Green
The House The house is within close proximity of Wood Green, Alexandra Park, Shopping City and the underground station. It is a six-bedroomed Edwardian double-fronted house, is owned by Hoffmann Foundation for Autism. It is situated on a residential street, next door to the Foundation's day centre. There are two bathrooms, a shower and an additional ground floor toilet. There is a large kitchen and living room and a conservatory, which spans two sides of the house and opens on to the pleasant back garden.
Residents The current service users all diagnosed with either Autism or Asperger's syndrome and moderate to severe learning disabilities. Service users are encouraged to take advantage of adult education programmes, where possible, and to enter supported employment schemes or attend day services.
Users work with TEACCH, a flexible communication system, which uses pictures and symbols to increase communication and social skills. They also participate in domestic activities around the home to develop their independent living skills. By providing a homely environment with sensitive staff support, residents have as much control over their lives as possible, and are active members of the community. Service users enjoy a range of activities these include use of public transport, cinema, pubs, swimming, independent travel / life skills etc. Staff The staff team, comprising a support manager, one deputy manager, two senior support workers and four support workers, have undertaken a range of training, including specialist autism training, support for mental health problems, medication, statutory training, SCIP (Strategy Crisis Intervention Prevention) TEACCH as well as bereavement and loss. The team is supported by our autism manager and consultant who provides specialist advice around service users' needs and behaviour management.
Several staff are pursuing NVQ2 and NVQ3 in care. Support managers and deputies are fully involved in developing the Hoffmann Foundation for Autism's strategic plan and managing their budgets. Our policies, based on the requirements of the Care Standards Act, are developed in-house and tested out in the units before being adopted by the organisation.
